It contains around 12–14% chromium, which allows it to resist corrosion in mild environments, and its high carbon content makes it suitable for heat treatment to achieve high hardness levels.

SS 420 sheets are commonly used in applications where strength, wear resistance, and sharpness are important, such as in cutlery, surgical instruments, valves, pump shafts, and industrial blades. After proper heat treatment, it can attain hardness levels similar to tool steels while retaining moderate corrosion resistance.
